Round robin cricket fixtures, and the rotation that builds them.
Every team plays every other team once. The method for generating that list by hand is a fixed rotation that takes about five minutes for eight teams, and it is worth understanding before you trust a generator with it.
How does a round robin cricket schedule work?
A round robin schedules every team against every other team once, producing n×(n−1)/2 matches across n−1 rounds for an even number of teams. For an odd number of teams, add a phantom team: whoever is drawn against it takes the bye that round, which makes the schedule n rounds long with one team resting in each.
Match count and round count
| Teams | Matches | Rounds | Matches per round | Byes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 | 2 | None |
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 2 | One per round |
| 6 | 15 | 5 | 3 | None |
| 7 | 21 | 7 | 3 | One per round |
| 8 | 28 | 7 | 4 | None |
| 10 | 45 | 9 | 5 | None |
The odd-team case is the one that surprises people: seven teams play more rounds than eight, because one team rests in each round. Seven teams is 7 rounds of 3 matches; eight teams is 7 rounds of 4.
The circle method
This is the standard way to generate a round robin by hand, and it is worth knowing before trusting a generator with it.
- Write the teams in two rows of equal length, side by side. Team 1 is fixed in the top-left and never moves.
- Each column is a match: top plays bottom.
- For the next round, rotate every team except the fixed one by one position, clockwise around the two rows.
- Repeat until the arrangement returns to its starting state. Every pairing will have occurred exactly once.
A worked example with six teams
Teams A to F. A is fixed; the rest rotate.
| Round | Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A v B | F v C | E v D |
| 2 | A v C | B v D | F v E |
| 3 | A v D | C v E | B v F |
| 4 | A v E | D v F | C v B |
| 5 | A v F | E v B | D v C |
Fifteen matches, five rounds, every pairing once. Check it by reading down any one team’s column: each appears exactly five times, once against each other team.
Deciding the table
A round robin produces a table, and tables tie. Publish the tiebreak sequence before the tournament: net run rate, then head-to-head result, then number of wins is the convention.
The reason to publish it rather than decide later is that a round robin tie is common rather than exceptional, and whichever tiebreak you pick after the fact will favour a specific team. The points table guide covers the full sequence and the walkover and abandonment edge cases, and the points table calculator applies them to results you enter.
When not to use one
When the match count exceeds your slots, which happens faster than people expect because the count grows quadratically. Four teams is 6 matches; twelve teams is 66. Somewhere around ten teams, a single round robin stops fitting into a local tournament’s available grounds and weekends.
At that point, split into groups and run a round robin inside each. You keep the fairness property where it matters most, inside the group that decides qualification, and pay for it in far fewer matches. Format comparison.
Round robin FAQ
How many rounds does a round robin take?
n−1 rounds for an even number of teams, and n rounds for an odd number, because one team rests each round. Six teams play five rounds of three matches; seven teams play seven rounds of three matches with one bye.
What is the circle method?
Fix one team in place and arrange the rest in a circle. Pair the fixed team with its neighbour and work inwards across the circle for the other pairings, then rotate the circle by one position for the next round. Repeating until the circle returns to its start produces every pairing exactly once.
Is a round robin always decided on points?
Points decide the order, and a tiebreak rule decides equal points. Publish the tiebreak sequence before the tournament: net run rate first is the convention, then head-to-head result, then wins. Leaving it unstated and deciding later is how a round robin ends in an argument.
When is a round robin the wrong choice?
When the match count exceeds your slots. Twelve teams in a single round robin is 66 matches, which across two grounds at four slots a day is more than eight days of cricket. At that size, split into groups.
